Rules & conditions

The CTT Zwift TT Series is run under the governance of Cycling Time Trials, the UK national governing body for time trialling. All participants are expected to have read and understood these rules before competing.

Code of conduct

  • Your primary power source must be your smart trainer. A power meter may be used as a secondary source for performance verification, but not as your primary source for the ride itself.
  • Riders must use an accurate and calibrated power source. Uncalibrated or unreliable power meters will not be accepted as evidence in verification.
  • Heart rate must be recorded for every ride.A result with no heart rate data is disqualified automatically when the round is processed. Heart rate can't be added after the ride, so there is no verification window for this.
  • Riders must race in the correct Zwift event and may not transfer results between accounts.
  • Zwift ID is the canonical rider identifier. No result will be transferred from one Zwift account to another.
  • Any attempt to manipulate results, misrepresent power data, or circumvent the verification process will result in immediate disqualification and a ban from future rounds.
  • The series is run in the spirit of fair competition. The series director reserves the right to investigate any result that appears inconsistent with a rider's known performance level.
  • All participants are expected to comply with the CTT's published rules, regulations, and code of conduct.
The CTT Zwift TT Series is governed by Cycling Time Trials. For the full CTT rule book and code of conduct visit cyclingtimetrials.org.uk.

Series format

The CTT Zwift TT Series is a 14-round virtual time trial series run on 7 Zwift courses, each raced twice— rounds 1–7 work through the seven courses in turn, and rounds 8–14 repeat them in the same order. Riders compete individually — this is a time trial, not a mass-start race.

Round breakdown

Course typeCoursesRounds
Flat36 — each course raced twice
Rolling36 — each course raced twice
Mountain12 — the course raced twice
Total7 courses14 rounds

Participation

  • Riders may enter any round they choose — there is no obligation to complete every round.
  • Competing for the General Classification is stricter: it needs a result on each of the 7 courses, not just any 7 rounds. Because every course is raced twice, that can be done in either half of the series.
  • Riders who do not start a round have no result recorded for that round (DNS).
  • DNF riders are excluded from results and scoring for that round.

Event settings

Every round is run with the same in-game settings. They are chosen to strip out everything that is not the rider — equipment, shelter, and in-game assistance — so that a time is a straight measure of the effort behind it, and times are comparable between riders and across the series.

In-game settings

  • Equipment is neutralised. Every rider is put on the same bike and wheels for the duration of the event, so your garage has no bearing on your time.
  • Drafting is disabled. There is no shelter to be had from another rider, and nothing to gain from sitting on a wheel.
  • Power-ups are disabled. No feathers, draft boosts, or aero helmets.
  • Staggered time trial start. Riders are released at intervals rather than as a bunch, in the standard Zwift time trial fashion.
  • One event for everyone. Open and Female riders ride the same event at the same time; the standings are what separate them, not the start list.
What this means for you: with drafting off and equipment neutralised there is no tactical advantage to chase — no wheel worth waiting for, and no faster bike to unlock. Your time is your own ride, which is what makes the results worth comparing.

Scoring

Cumulative time — lowest wins

The series uses a General Classification (GC) format, the same style used in stage races: your series score is the sum of your actual finish times (to the millisecond) across your counting rounds. There are no points — the clock is the scoring system.

Lowest cumulative time = better. A rider who is fastest in their category every round will have the lowest (best) series score.

Finishing position

Each round still records a finishing position within category and gender (1st, 2nd, 3rd…). Position is used for round result tables, medals, and the GC tiebreaker below — it is not summed for series scoring.

Ties

  • Finish times are recorded to the nearest millisecond.
  • If two or more riders share an identical finish time in a round, all tied riders receive the same (lower) position. The next rider receives the position after the entire tied group.
  • Example: two riders tie for 3rd — both are shown as 3rd. The next rider is shown as 5th (not 4th).

Disqualified results

  • Disqualified (DQ) results are excluded from all scoring and do not receive a position for that round.
  • When a result is DQ'd, all other riders in that category group are re-ranked from scratch.
  • Results are never deleted — they are status-flagged only.

General Classification (GC)

The series runs on 7 courses, and each one is raced twice — once in the first half of the series, once in the second. A rider's series score is their cumulative time across 7 counting results: one per course. You get two attempts at every course and the faster of the two counts. The system picks them automatically — riders do not choose.

Read it as “every course once”, not “any 3 flat rounds”. The 3 flat, 3 rolling and 1 mountain results aren't a free pick from the flat, rolling and mountain rounds — they are one result from each of the 3 flat courses, each of the 3 rolling courses, and the mountain course. Riding one flat course twice does not fill another flat course's slot: a second run at a course you have already done can only replace your own time on that course.

Counting rounds template

Course typeCoursesRoundsCounting results
Flat36 — each course raced twiceYour fastest run on each of the 3
Rolling36 — each course raced twiceYour fastest run on each of the 3
Mountain12 — the course raced twiceYour fastest run of the 2
Total7 courses14 rounds7 counting results
Skip a course and you cannot complete the template. Miss both runnings of any one of the 7 courses and that slot stays empty for the rest of the series — there is nothing else that can fill it, however many other rounds you ride. A rider who does 12 of the 14 rounds but never rides one particular flat course is not GC eligible; a rider who does exactly 7 rounds, one on each course, is.
"Fastest" means fastest raw time, not best placing. Where you have raced a course twice, the run that counts is the one with the quicker clock time — not the one where you finished higher in your category. A strong 2nd place on your first run at a course can lose out to a 6th place on your second run if the 6th-place time was faster. This is expected behaviour, not an error.

GC eligibility

  • GC eligibility requires a completed result on every one of the 7 courses— all 3 flat courses, all 3 rolling courses, and the mountain course. That is what the “3 flat, 3 rolling, 1 mountain” template means.
  • Each course is raced twice, so riders have two chances at each. Only one result per course counts, and it is always the faster of the two.
  • Riding a course twice does not count as two of that course type's qualifying results — the second run only competes with your own time on that same course.
  • Riders missing a result on one or more courses still appear in standings, ranked below eligible riders and marked as ineligible.

GC tiebreaker

Cumulative time is the series score, so the rider with the lower total is always ranked higher. If two or more riders share an identical cumulative time across their counting 7 (down to the millisecond), the following tiebreaker chain is applied in order:

  1. Most wins (1st-place finishes) within the counting 7 results
  2. Most 2nd places within the counting 7 results
  3. Continue down positions until the tie is broken
  4. If the tie still isn’t broken, the riders share the standing position

Team GC

Team GC is currently paused. The previous team scoring method summed points across all categories, which worked because points already put a Cat E win and a Cat A win on equal footing. Cumulative time doesn't have that property — a team's fastest Cat A/B riders would always outscore its other riders regardless of how well they placed within their own category. Team scoring is switched off while a fair time-based method is worked out, rather than ship a version that undermines mixed-category team competition.

Performance categories

Performance categories (A–E) are assigned automatically based on each rider's vELO2 TT ranking on zwiftracing.app, snapshotted at the start of each round. Categories are assigned at results processing time — riders do not self-select their category.

Classification (Open / Female)

  • You ride in the Femaleclassification only if you have entered through CTT and the classification on your CTT account is Female. Female eligibility follows CTT's rules, so the gender on your Zwift profile is not used.
  • Everyone else rides in Open, including riders who haven't entered through CTT yet and riders who haven't completed the gender declaration on their CTT account.
  • If you race before entering, your results start in Open. Once you enter through CTT as Female, those results move to Female and the rounds are rescored.
  • Classification decides which rating ranges below set your category.

Open rating ranges

CategoryvELO2 TT Rating
Cat A576 – 1000
Cat B451 – 575
Cat C351 – 450
Cat D251 – 350
Cat E0 – 250

Female rating ranges

CategoryvELO2 TT Rating
Cat A426 – 1000
Cat B326 – 425
Cat C251 – 325
Cat D176 – 250
Cat E0 – 175

Unranked riders

  • Riders without a vELO2 TT rank are assigned Cat D by default and flagged for admin review.
  • After 1–2 rounds, zwiftracing.app will generate a rank and future rounds will use that rank.
  • If vELO2 TT ranking is unavailable, standard Zwift categories (A/B/C/D) are used as a fallback.

Mid-series category changes

  • A rider's category is snapshotted at the start of each round independently.
  • If a rider's rank changes between rounds, their new category applies from the next round onwards.
  • Historical results are never rescored — each result permanently retains the category assigned at time of race.
  • Mid-series promotions and demotions are expected and handled automatically.
  • The one exception is classification(Open or Female). When CTT's classification for you changes, for example when you enter as Female after racing in Open, your earlier results move to match and the affected rounds are rescored, including rounds already locked.

Age categories

CTT age categories are used for filtering results and standings. They follow the CTT handbook and are worked out for the day of each round, so a rider can move category during the series, for example on reaching 40 or at the turn of the year.

Age categoryWho
YouthUntil their 16th birthday
JuniorFrom their 16th birthday until 31 December of the year of their 18th birthday
EspoirFrom 1 January of the year after their 18th birthday until 31 December of the year of their 22nd birthday
SeniorFrom 1 January of the year after their 22nd birthday until their 40th birthday
Veteran 40–4440 to 44 on the day of the round
Veteran 45–4945 to 49 on the day of the round
Veteran 50–5450 to 54 on the day of the round
Veteran 55–5955 to 59 on the day of the round
Veteran 60–6460 to 64 on the day of the round
Veteran 65–6965 to 69 on the day of the round
Veteran 70+70 or over on the day of the round
  • The series runs over New Year, so Junior and Espoir riders can change category between a December round and a January round.
  • The CTT handbook defines Veteran as 40 and over. The 5-year veteran bands are the series' own.
  • Standings show each rider in the age category of their most recent round. Rider profiles and the rider directory show their current age category.
Age category is only recorded for CTT registered riders, from the date of birth on their CTT account. Non-CTT (guest) riders do not have an age category assigned.

Age-graded times (VTTA)

The series runs in association with the Veterans Time Trials Association (VTTA), who provide the age-graded standard times used for veteran riders. Age-adjusted times (VTTA AAT) are shown alongside actual times in round results and series standings.

  • Each round has its own VTTA data sheet giving a time deduction for every age, calculated for that specific course. Your age-adjusted time is your actual finish time minus that deduction.
  • Deductions are set per single year of age — there is no banding — and differ between Open and Female.
  • The deduction is nil at age 40 and increases with age.
  • Age used is your age at the time of the race, taken from the date of birth on your CTT account or, if you haven't linked through CTT, the age on your Zwift profile.
  • Riders with no deduction published for their age (including riders under 40) have no age-adjusted time and are excluded when standings are filtered to VTTA times.
  • Age-graded times are shown for information only — they do not affect GC scoring or finishing positions.

Verification & disqualification

After each round the series director reviews results and may flag any result that appears anomalous. Flagged results enter a verification window before any disqualification is applied.

Result statuses

StatusMeaning
ValidResult counts for scoring and standings
Pending verificationRider has been asked to submit supporting evidence
Disqualified (DQ)Result excluded from all scoring

Verification workflow

  1. Series director flags a result — status changes to Pending Verification
  2. CTT contact the rider on our behalf, explaining what supporting data is required (e.g. weigh-in data, dual power recording)
  3. Day 3: a reminder is sent if no response has been received
  4. Day 7: if no response is received, the result is automatically disqualified and the round is rescored
Riders must respond within 7 days of a verification request. The 7 days start when you are contacted. Failure to provide supporting evidence within this window will result in automatic disqualification. The verification deadline is given in the request.

DQ reversal

  • The series director may reverse a DQ if supporting evidence is accepted.
  • Reversal triggers an automatic rescore of all affected results.
  • All status changes (in both directions) are logged with a timestamp and the administrator's name.

Results lock

  • Results are locked 7 days after each round completes.
  • Locked results cannot be modified without the series director manually unlocking the round.
  • The 7-day window is designed to give sufficient time for verification requests to be resolved.

Prize eligibility

  • Only CTT registered riders are eligible for prizes.
  • CTT membership must be verified by the series director before any prize is awarded.
  • GC prize eligibility requires a result on every one of the 7 courses — all 3 flat courses, all 3 rolling courses, and the mountain course.
  • Each course is raced twice, so a missed round can be made up on the course's second running. Miss both and that course's slot cannot be filled.
  • Guest (non-CTT) riders appear in all results and standings but are marked ineligible for prizes.
  • Prize decisions made by the series director are final.

Your data

The series is run in partnership with Cycling Time Trials. If you entered through CTT, your details come from your CTT account and are covered by CTT's privacy policy, which also explains how CTT handle your data. This section covers what is specific to the series: where our data comes from, what we publish, the decisions made automatically, and your rights.

The CTT Zwift TT Series is the controller for the data described here. For any question about your data, contact the series organiser at philgilbanks@googlemail.com.

We rely on your series entry for the data CTT give us, and on our legitimate interest in publishing and checking the results of a public sporting event for data from Zwift and ZwiftPower. That is the same data Zwift and ZwiftPower already show for the event.

What we publish

Results pages, standings and rider profiles on this site are public. They show:

  • Your name, Zwift team and whether you are a CTT registered rider
  • Classification (Open / Female) and CTT age category. Your date of birth is never shown.
  • Performance category (A–E) and your vELO2 TT rating for each round
  • Finish times and positions
  • Ride data: power, watts per kilogram, FTP, peak power, weight, and heart rate

Never published: your date of birth, CTT Rider ID and VTTA membership number.

Results also go beyond this site, as a result sheet would for a road event. A summary of the top three in each category and classification (name and time) is posted automatically to the series Discord, and the organiser may post results and standings on the series' social media. Only data already public here is used. Once posted, it is also covered by that platform's own privacy policy. If you would rather not be named in these posts, tell us.

Decisions made automatically

Two decisions about your results are made by software, with no person reviewing them first:

  • No heart rate data: the result is disqualified when the round is processed (see the code of conduct).
  • Verification deadline:a flagged result is disqualified if 7 days pass after you are contacted with no supporting evidence (see verification & disqualification). The 7 days only start once you have been told, by CTT on our behalf.
You have the right to ask for a person to review any automatic disqualification, to put your side, and to have the decision reconsidered. Email the organiser.

Your rights

  • Access and portability: ask for a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Correction: if you entered through CTT, change your details at CTT and they update here automatically. Otherwise, tell us.
  • Erasure:ask us to delete your data. Results are part of the sporting record, so we may anonymise your entry rather than remove the result, where removing it would unfairly change other riders' standings. If you entered through CTT, unlinking your Zwift account at CTT removes your CTT details here.
  • Objection:object to us publishing your results. We'll remove or anonymise them unless there is an overriding reason to keep them.
  • Human review of any automatic disqualification (see above).
